SSC now accepts Mangal only. The SSC CHSL 2026 notice and the SSC Stenographer addendum of 23 September 2026 say Hindi must be typed in Mangal font; another font means non-qualification. Mangal is Unicode, so the Remington and Inscript layouts on this page produce the same kind of text. SSC CGL DEST, Supreme Court JCA and Delhi High Court JJA test English only. Each layout also has its own page: the Kruti Dev typing test, the Mangal (Inscript) typing test and the Remington GAIL typing test. All ten practice passages are printed in full on the Hindi typing paragraph page, and the 10 minute Hindi typing test runs the usual exam length.
Kruti Dev and Mangal: What Is the Difference?

Hindi Typing Test FAQ
What aspirants ask about Hindi layouts, fonts and scoring.
LayoutWhich Hindi layout should I practise, Remington or Inscript?
Practise the layout your notice names. Remington (GAIL) keeps the Kruti Dev and DevLys typewriter layout for most letters and matras, though a few keys differ; Inscript is the Government of India standard. CAPF, Patna High Court and MP High Court name Remington GAIL; Allahabad High Court and UP Police name Inscript; MP CPCT lets you choose either when you apply.
Kruti DevIs Kruti Dev still allowed in SSC typing tests?
No. The SSC CHSL 2026 notice says Hindi LDC/JSA candidates must type in Mangal font only, and an SSC Stenographer addendum of 23 September 2026 says the same. RRB NTPC still names Kruti Dev or Mangal, and Rajasthan (RSSB, Rajasthan High Court) and HP courts still use Kruti Dev or DevLys.
Kruti Dev keysI learned on Kruti Dev. Can I use the same keys here?
Mostly. Choose Remington GAIL in the Layout menu. It keeps the Kruti Dev keys for most letters and matras, with ि typed before the consonant and the reph (Shift+Z) after the syllable. A few keys differ, including the danda (।), which is Shift+1 here and Shift+A in Kruti Dev; ृ, which is = here and ` (the key left of 1) in Kruti Dev; त्र, which is Shift+9 here and = in Kruti Dev; the nukta, which is ` here and Shift+= in Kruti Dev; and the halant, which is Shift+= here and Shift+` in Kruti Dev. The text is produced in Unicode, which is what a Mangal exam records.
KeyboardDo I need to install a Hindi keyboard or font?
No. Keep your computer keyboard on English. The test turns each key into the Hindi letter for the layout you pick, and shows the passage in the Devanagari font already on your device.
PhoneCan I take the Hindi typing test on a phone?
Yes, with your phone's Hindi keyboard: choose "Phone keyboard" in the Layout menu. Exam centres use full-size keyboards, so for exam practice connect a USB or OTG keyboard and pick Remington or Inscript.
SpeedHow is Hindi typing speed counted?
This test counts five characters as one word, the way SSC counts key depressions, and subtracts uncorrected mistakes for net speed. Some exams count words instead: RRB NTPC ignores 5% of mistakes and deducts 10 words for each one after that. Read your own exam's evaluation rules as well.
