The law of contempt exists to protect the administration of justice and to preserve the authority and dignity of the courts. It does not shield individual judges from criticism, nor does it exist for their personal comfort; its purpose is to ensure that the public may continue to rely on the courts as impartial bodies whose orders will be obeyed. If orders could be disregarded or proceedings obstructed without consequence, the rule of law would soon weaken. Contempt is broadly divided into two kinds, civil and criminal. Civil contempt consists of wilful disobedience of a judgment, decree, direction, order, writ or other process of a court, or the wilful breach of an undertaking given to a court. The word wilful is important. A party who fails to comply because it was truly impossible to do so, or because the order was unclear, cannot ordinarily be punished, although the court may direct that the order be carried out within a fixed period. Criminal contempt covers conduct that scandalises or tends to scandalise the court, that prejudices or interferes with the due course of any judicial proceeding, or that obstructs the administration of justice in any other manner. Publication of words, spoken or written, signs or visible representations may fall within this category when they lower the authority of the court or create a real risk of prejudice to a pending case. Fair comment on a decision that has been finally made, expressed in temperate language and in good faith, is not contempt. Courts have repeatedly recognised that reasoned criticism is a healthy part of democratic life. The line is crossed only when criticism turns into abuse, imputes improper motives without basis, or is calculated to shake public confidence in the fairness of the judiciary as a whole. Similarly, a fair and accurate report of judicial proceedings held in open court, published without malice, does not amount to contempt. In suitable cases, truth may be raised as a defence where it is in the public interest and is offered in good faith. The procedure is intended to be fair to the person charged. A notice must set out the allegations clearly, and the alleged contemnor must be given a proper opportunity to file a reply and to be heard, usually through counsel. An apology offered honestly and at the earliest stage may be accepted, but a mere formal expression of regret, made as a device to escape punishment, will not necessarily satisfy the court. The punishment may include a fine, simple imprisonment for a limited term, or both, and the court has regard to the gravity of the act and the conduct of the offender. A limitation period applies, so that proceedings are not initiated after a long delay. High Courts, as courts of record, hold the power to punish for contempt of themselves and of the courts subordinate to them, and an appeal is available against an order of punishment as provided by law. The jurisdiction must be exercised with restraint and only where the interference is real and substantial. Mere technical or trivial disobedience, which causes no real prejudice to the other side, is seldom treated as a ground for punishment. A court that is secure in its authority will use this power sparingly, and will be guided always by the principle that justice must not only be done but be seen to be done. It is equally important to remember the limits of this power. Fair criticism of a judgment, made in good faith and in temperate language, is not contempt, because a free society must be able to discuss the working of its institutions. The law also recognises that a person charged with contempt must be given a clear notice of the allegation and a fair opportunity to explain his conduct. In many cases a sincere and unconditional apology, offered at the earliest stage, is accepted by the court, and the proceedings are closed. Where punishment is imposed, it should be proportionate to the harm caused to the administration of justice. Court staff also have a role in this area, since the careful service of orders and the accurate recording of undertakings given by parties make it easier to decide later whether an order was wilfully disobeyed. In this way the law of contempt protects the dignity of courts without silencing honest opinion.
Allahabad High Court Test — Exam Overview
Allahabad High Court typing practice on this page uses a 20-minute session to build sustained accuracy on legal text. Confirm your post and recruitment year before choosing a practice pattern.
The linked 2021 NTA RO/ARO/Computer Assistant FAQ describes a 500-word English task in 20 minutes, a minimum speed of 25 WPM and a minimum 25 marks out of 50. It does not establish the pattern for APS or every court post. TypingHub does not reproduce the official marking system.
How this exam differs
This practice uses a 20-minute session. Coverage of the RO/ARO/Computer Assistant 2026 syllabus describes the same pattern as the linked 2021 material; confirm it in the notice. It does not apply automatically to APS.
Legal passages need careful handling of names, dates, references and punctuation. Review skipped text as well as speed after each session.
TypingHub provides practice analytics, not an official score out of 50. Do not convert its character errors into a claimed 0.1-mark court penalty.

Practise the 2021 Reference Format
What the dated reference describes
- iAbout 500 words of English text to be typed in 20 minutes.
- iThat is 25 words a minute just to reach the last line, which matches the 25 WPM minimum in the same document.
- iMarks were out of 50 with 25 as the minimum; this page reports speed and errors, not those marks.
How to use the 20-minute timer here
- iTreat finishing all 500 words inside the timer as the first goal, then reduce errors.
- iAt the 10-minute mark you should be past the halfway point of the passage.
- iRecord where you stopped if time ran out; that line shows how far your pace is short.
A Four-Week Plan for Long Legal Passages
Week 1: steady 10-minute runs
Type legal passages for 10 minutes at a pace that keeps accuracy high. Aim to reach about 250 words without rushing.
Week 2: legal vocabulary
Drill words that recur in judgments and orders, such as petitioner, respondent, aforesaid, hereinafter and appellant, until you type them without looking.
Week 3: full 20-minute sessions
Move to the full 20 minutes. Note whether errors rise in the last five minutes; that is a stamina gap, not a speed gap.
Week 4: numbers and citations
Practise section numbers, dates, case numbers and brackets, which are easy to drop when typing fast.
Exam-Day Rules, Accommodations & Common Mistakes
Check the official Allahabad High Court Test notice
- iReporting time, identity documents, the keyboard and software provided, scribe or compensatory-time provisions, and how mistakes are counted are set by the recruiting body. The current notification and your admit card override any general advice.
- iGeneral questions: Backspace rules, keyboard layouts and Hindi fonts are answered in the typing exam FAQ.
- iRoutines and drills: scoring rules, accuracy drills and test-day routines are in our exam guides.
Reading Your 20-Minute Report
Split the session in two
Compare the words typed in the first and second ten minutes. A large drop means you should train longer sessions before trying to type faster.
Count dropped lines
Long legal sentences make it easy to skip a line. If the report shows missing text in blocks, slow your reading, not your fingers.
Check the dated scope
The 2021 document covers RO/ARO/Computer Assistant. Confirm the pattern for your own post before copying its timing.
Understanding Your TypingHub Practice Report
Characters and words
- iCharacter comparison: Ordinary incorrect, extra or missing characters carry full weight in the practice analysis. A single misspelled word can contain several character errors.
- iCase and punctuation: Case-only substitutions and punctuation substitutions receive half weight. Added or omitted characters are counted separately.
- iSkipped or extra words: The report identifies missing and extra words as well as character differences. Read the highlighted passage to understand each mismatch.
Using the result
- iTwo accuracy measures: Character accuracy and word accuracy measure different things. A word counts as correct only when it matches the reference word.
- iPractice targets: A practice pass or fail is based on this test’s configured targets. It is not a recruiting authority’s qualification decision.
- iOfficial evaluation: Check the notice and evaluation instructions for your exact recruitment year, post and category. Do not convert this report into official examination marks.
Understanding Your Typing Practice Report
The arithmetic behind Gross WPM, Net WPM and key depressions. Your notice decides which of these it uses.
Gross WPM
Gross WPM = (total keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Letters, spaces and punctuation all count, and five keystrokes make one standard word.
Net WPM
Net WPM subtracts a penalty for uncorrected errors from Gross WPM. Two candidates with the same raw speed can end up several WPM apart.
Key depressions (KDPH)
Some notices state speed as key depressions. 35 WPM equals 10,500 key depressions an hour (35 × 5 × 60), and 30 WPM equals 9,000.
Full and half mistakes
TypingHub groups errors to help you review an attempt. Full and half weights in this report are practice feedback; use your recruitment's evaluation instructions for official penalties.
4-Week Practice Plan for Allahabad High Court Test
An adaptable practice routine, not a qualification guarantee. Repeat a stage until your accuracy is steady.
Week 1: Accuracy base
Touch-typing drills without looking at the keys. Hold 95% accuracy or better and ignore speed for now.
Week 2: Build speed
Two timed five-minute runs a day. Raise your pace by two or three WPM only once accuracy stays steady.
Week 3: Full-length mocks
One full Allahabad High Court Test mock a day for the exam's full duration. Read the error report and retype the words you missed.
Week 4: Exam rehearsal
Practise at your exam's time of day, on a full-size keyboard, with your notice's backspace rule. Aim a few WPM above the target.

HINDICan I practise the Allahabad High Court Hindi typing test here?
Yes. Choose Hindi in the Language menu of this test. It sets the 25 WPM Hindi target, opens on Inscript and lists Hindi passages.
