Not every Hindi paper is 10 minutes. MP CPCT runs 15 minutes at 20 net WPM, Rajasthan High Court runs a 5-minute Hindi speed paper, UPSSSC Junior Assistant is reported at 5 minutes per language, and RSSB LDC scores marks per correct word across speed and efficiency papers. Use the 5 and 15 minute pages for those.

Words Needed in 10 Minutes of Hindi

Words = WPM × 10. The report counts five Unicode characters as a word, so matras and the halant count; this is why Hindi targets sit 5 WPM below English for the same exam.

Pick the Layout Your Notice Names

The Layout menu on the test above switches the key map. Output is Unicode in every case, which is what a Mangal console records.

3 Layouts
Remington GAIL

The typewriter layout

Named by CPCT, CAPF, Patna High Court and MP High Court. Same physical keys as Kruti Dev for nearly every letter; ि is typed before its consonant and the reph after the syllable.

Kruti Dev 010

The legacy font's keys

Named by RRB, DSSSB, HP courts and Rajasthan; DevLys 010 shares the map. The test types the same keys but records Unicode, so a Kruti Dev exam screen shows the same words in its own font.

Inscript

The Government of India standard

Phonetic order: consonant first, then the matra. Named by UP Police and Allahabad High Court, and accepted wherever a notice says Mangal or Unicode without naming a layout.

Phone

On a phone, use your own keyboard

Soft keyboards compose text themselves, so the test accepts whatever your Hindi keyboard produces and scores it. Call it practice; the exam hall has a physical keyboard.

Rules That Change the Verdict

The same 10 minutes of Hindi passes one board and fails another. These are the differences that matter.

4 Rules
Backspace

RRB locks it

Railway CBTST turns Backspace and editing keys off; SSC and most courts allow correction. Practise one run in three with Backspace off whatever your exam, and every run if it is RRB.

Allowance

RRB, CAPF and CSIR ignore 5%

Mistakes up to 5% of words typed are ignored, then each one costs 10 words. At 300 words, 15 mistakes are free and the 16th costs 10 words.

Accuracy floor

Patna sets 85%

Patna High Court asks for 30 WPM and at least 85% accuracy in Hindi. The test above applies 85% accuracy to the Hindi verdict; the Patna page applies the full rule.

Font

SSC accepts Mangal only

From the SSC CHSL 2026 notice the Hindi test is in Mangal. Remington GAIL and Inscript both produce Mangal text; a Kruti Dev font is not offered on the console.

Holding Hindi Speed for Ten Minutes

What separates a 23 from a 27 on a long Hindi run.

  • Conjuncts are the time sink. After each run, type every missed conjunct word ten times; most Hindi speed comes from the ten commonest conjuncts.
  • Keep ि in the right order for your layout. On Remington and Kruti Dev it goes before the consonant; a reversed ि is a full mistake in the word.
  • Type the danda. A missed । is half a mistake on SSC rules and a mistake on every court rule.
  • Use the Hindi passages of your own exam page once the general ones sit above target; each exam page has three.
  • Warm up with the 1-minute or 2-minute test in Hindi before the ten-minute run so the first paragraph is not the slowest.
  • Judge by net WPM over the full ten minutes. A verdict needs the whole time or the whole passage.

10 Minute Hindi Typing Test FAQ

6 Questions
Words

How many words should I type in 10 minutes of Hindi?

250 words for a 25 WPM exam (RRB NTPC, Delhi Police HCM, HP courts) and 300 for a 30 WPM exam (SSC CHSL, CAPF, CSIR, DSSSB LDC, Patna High Court). MP High Court asks for about 350 words in Hindi.

Layout

Which Hindi keyboard does the 10 minute test use?

Your choice of Remington GAIL, Kruti Dev 010 or Inscript from the Layout menu, with the computer keyboard left on English. Output is Unicode in every layout. On a phone the test uses your own Hindi keyboard.

Font

Do I need Kruti Dev or Mangal installed?

No. The test types Devanagari itself from the physical key, and the passages are Unicode, which every browser shows. Nothing is downloaded.

Mistakes

How many mistakes are allowed in a 10 minute Hindi typing test?

It depends on the board. RRB, CAPF and CSIR ignore 5% of mistakes and then deduct 10 words each; HP courts allow up to 10%; Patna High Court asks for 85% accuracy; SSC deducts full and half mistakes from the speed instead of setting a limit.

Backspace

Is Backspace allowed in the Hindi typing test?

In SSC and most court tests, yes. In the RRB NTPC CBTST it is locked off, along with the other editing keys. The Backspace menu on the test above lets you practise either way.

Speed

Why is the Hindi target lower than English?

Hindi words carry matras and conjunct marks, each a character, so the same spoken word needs more keystrokes. Notices set Hindi 5 WPM below English for the same post: 30 and 35 at SSC CHSL, 25 and 30 at RRB.
