Number Typing Test
Five minutes of figures only: amounts, dates, percentages, reference codes. The test above scores them like any passage, so a wrong digit shows up as a mistake in that figure.
Where Numbers Appear in Typing Tests
No government typing test is numbers only, but figures are where attempts lose words. These are the places.
Data entry passages
DEST is stated in key depressions because its passage carries figures, amounts and abbreviations. A wrong digit makes the whole figure a full mistake under SSC's guidelines.
Key depressions per hour
The DEO skill test is 8,000 or 15,000 key depressions per hour from printed matter. Figures typed from paper are the slowest part because the eye has to return to the exact column.
Years, percentages, amounts
Ordinary SSC, railway and court passages carry years (2026), percentages (7.5%) and amounts (Rs. 12,500). Each is a word; each costs a full mistake if any character is wrong.
After the exam
Clerical and data entry posts spend most of the day on figures. The habit built here, eyes on the source and not the keys, is the one the job needs.
Top Row or Numeric Keypad
Both reach the same digits. Exams do not say which you must use; most centre keyboards are full size with a keypad, and a laptop has only the top row.
Numbers inside prose
When a figure sits in a sentence, the top row keeps your hands on the home row: 1 2 3 with the left little, ring and middle fingers, 4 5 with the index, 6 7 with the right index, 8 9 0 with the middle, ring and little fingers.
Columns of figures
For a run of amounts or codes the keypad is faster: 4 5 6 under the index, middle and ring fingers, 7 8 9 above, 1 2 3 below, 0 under the thumb, Enter under the little finger. Practise it without looking, as a second home row.
Match the exam machine
DEST and DEO passages mix prose and figures, so drill the top row first. Use the keypad only once the top row is reliable, and only if you know the centre keyboard has one.
Commas, points and the rupee
Figures bring symbols: the comma in 1,25,000, the decimal point, the per cent sign, the hyphen in a date. Each is a character the report checks. Shift+5 for % and the hyphen key need their own drill.
Indian Figures the Passages Use
The passages follow Indian conventions. Type them exactly as shown; a Western comma pattern in a lakh figure is a mistake.
| Kind | Written as | Keys to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Amounts | Rs. 1,25,000.50 | Comma after the first two digits of a lakh, then every two; the decimal point |
| Dates | 15/10/2026 or 15 October 2026 | Slash with the right little finger; the capital in a month name |
| Percentages | 7.5% | Shift+5 for the per cent sign; no space before it |
| Reference codes | INV-2026-00457 | Capitals with Shift, hyphens on the key right of 0 |
| PIN codes | 110001 | Six digits, no comma; fingers return to the home row after |
| Times | 10:30 a.m. | Colon is Shift+semicolon; the full stops in a.m. |
What Speed to Expect on Figures
Figure-only text runs slower than prose for everyone. The report still counts five characters as a word, so a 20 WPM score here is a good result.
| Typist | Prose speed | Likely figure speed | Characters in 5 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| New to the top row | 25 WPM | 10 to 12 WPM | 250 to 300 |
| Touch-types prose | 35 WPM | 18 to 22 WPM | 450 to 550 |
| Drilled on figures | 40 WPM | 25 to 30 WPM | 625 to 750 |
| Keypad trained | Any | 30 WPM plus on columns | 750 plus |
Accuracy over speed on figures. The test above passes at 20 WPM with 95% accuracy. A wrong digit in an amount is not a typo the reader can forgive; in a data entry post it is a wrong payment. Train to 98% before you train for speed.
Number Drills That Work
Ten minutes a day on figures moves a DEST score more than another full mock.
- Home row to top row and back: type 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 then the home row, twenty times, eyes on the screen. The return trip is where fingers lose their place.
- Pairs: 12 23 34 45 56 67 78 89 90, then in reverse. Builds the sideways reach between neighbouring digits.
- Amounts: type ten lakh figures with commas, Rs. 1,25,000 style, from a printed list. The comma rhythm is different from English prose.
- Dates: thirty dates in dd/mm/yyyy form. The slash key and the double zero in 2026 are the usual slips.
- Keypad only: if your keyboard has one, type a column of twenty amounts with the right hand alone, left hand in your lap.
- Mixed run: a 5-minute number test here, then a 10-minute prose test, so figures inside sentences stop breaking your rhythm.
Number Typing Test FAQ
ExamsIs there a numeric typing test in government exams?
Not as a separate paper in the exams covered here. Figures appear inside the passages, most heavily in SSC CGL DEST and the SSC CHSL DEO skill test, which are stated in key depressions because of them.
KeypadShould I use the numeric keypad in the typing test?
For figures inside prose, the top row keeps your hands on the home row and is usually faster. The keypad wins on columns of figures. Centre keyboards are normally full size with a keypad, but the passage decides which is quicker.
SpeedWhat is a good number typing speed?
Figure-only text runs at roughly half to two-thirds of prose speed. A touch typist at 35 WPM in prose typically scores 18 to 22 WPM on figures; 25 WPM plus with 98% accuracy is a strong result.
MistakesHow does the test count a wrong digit?
The figure is one word, so a wrong, missing or extra digit makes it a wrong word: one full mistake under the SSC rule, and a hit to character accuracy for every wrong keystroke in it.
PassagesWhat is in the number passages?
Short lines of amounts in Indian comma style, dates, percentages, reference codes, PIN codes and times, in the forms office documents use. They are the site's own, scored like any other passage.
FreeIs the number typing test free?
Yes. It runs without sign-in and shows the full mistake report. Signing in only lets you save the score.
