Convert Key Depressions per Hour to WPM
Enter a KDPH figure, a WPM target, or the key depressions you typed and the minutes taken.
26.67 WPM (KDPH ÷ 300)
10,500 KDPH (WPM × 300)
26.67 WPM = 8,000 KDPH
The KDPH and WPM Formulas
Five key depressions a word, 60 minutes an hour: 300 KDPH equal 1 WPM.
Divide KDPH by 300
WPM = KDPH ÷ 300. 9,000 KDPH ÷ 300 = 30 WPM.
Multiply WPM by 300
KDPH = WPM × 300. 35 WPM × 300 = 10,500 KDPH, the SSC CHSL English figure.
WPM from a key count
WPM = key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. 1,500 in 10 minutes = 30 WPM.
KDPH from a key count
KDPH = key depressions × 60 ÷ minutes. 1,750 in 10 minutes = 10,500 KDPH.
8,000 KDPH in WPM and Other Exam Targets
Where a notice states WPM, KDPH is worked out here at 300 per WPM. Confirm each figure in your notice.
| KDPH | WPM | Keys in 10 min | Keys in 15 min | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7,500 | 25 | 1,250 | 1,875 | Hindi for RRB NTPC and Delhi Police HCM (stated in WPM) |
| 8,000 | 26.67 | 1,333 | 2,000 | SSC CHSL DEO Part B; Rajasthan High Court 2022; CGL DEST works out the same |
| 9,000 | 30 | 1,500 | 2,250 | Hindi for SSC CHSL LDC/JSA, CAPF HCM, CSIR JSA, DSSSB LDC |
| 10,500 | 35 | 1,750 | 2,625 | English for SSC CHSL LDC/JSA, CAPF HCM, CSIR JSA, EPFO SSA 2023 |
| 12,000 | 40 | 2,000 | 3,000 | Delhi High Court SPA/PA, DSSSB JJA (stated in WPM) |
| 13,500 | 45 | 2,250 | 3,375 | Telangana court Typist (stated in WPM) |
| 15,000 | 50 | 2,500 | 3,750 | SSC CHSL DEO Part A |
Per hour is a rate, not the test length. SSC's DEO and DEST papers last 15 minutes, so 8,000 KDPH there means about 2,000 correct key depressions, not 8,000.
How SSC Counts Key Depressions
Only what the notices and SSC's evaluation guidelines say.
| Point | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Words to keys | 35 w.p.m. is about 10,500 KDPH and 30 w.p.m. about 9,000: five per word. | CHSL 2026, 13.9.13.7 |
| What counts | DEO speed is judged on correct entry against the given passage. | CHSL 2026, 13.9.13.6 |
| Passage size | DEO Part B about 2,000 to 2,200 key depressions; Part A 3,700 to 4,000; CGL DEST about 2,000. | CHSL and CGL 2026 |
| Spaces | The notices quoted here do not list which keys count. A missing or extra space is a half mistake; Delhi High Court counts characters with space. | SSC guidelines; Delhi HC 2026 |
| Errors | Calculated up to two decimal places and marked under one set of guidelines for Typing Test and DEST scripts. | CHSL 2026, 13.9.13.3 and .4 |
| On this site | Each typed character counts once, the space between words included; a capital is one character. | TypingHub engine |
Worked Examples
The figures searched for most, step by step.
8000 key depressions per hour in WPM
8,000 ÷ 300 = 26.67 WPM. Over the 15-minute DEO test that is 2,000 key depressions, the low end of the Part B passage.
SSC CGL DEST, 2,000 keys in 15 minutes
2,000 ÷ 5 ÷ 15 = 26.67 WPM, or 8,000 KDPH: the same rate as DEO Part B.
15000 key depressions per hour in WPM
15,000 ÷ 300 = 50 WPM, or 3,750 key depressions in 15 minutes, inside the 3,700 to 4,000 of a Part A passage.
10000 key depressions per hour in WPM
10,000 ÷ 300 = 33.33 WPM, between DEO Part B (8,000) and CHSL English (10,500).
From a 10 minute result to KDPH
1,820 key depressions in 10 minutes = 36.4 gross WPM = 10,920 KDPH. With 6 full and 4 half mistakes (8 weighted), net WPM = 36.4 − 8 ÷ 10 = 35.6. The report rounds both to whole numbers.
How long a 600 key paragraph takes
600 ÷ 5 = 120 words: 4 minutes 30 seconds at 8,000 KDPH, about 3 minutes 26 seconds at 10,500.
KDPH, WPM, CPM and Net WPM Compared
All convert through five key depressions a word, except CPCT's NWPM.
| Unit | What it measures | Convert |
|---|---|---|
| Key depression | One key press that enters a character | 5 = 1 word |
| KDPH | Key depressions per hour, a rate | WPM × 300 |
| WPM | Words per minute | KDPH ÷ 300 |
| CPM | Characters per minute | WPM × 5, or KDPH ÷ 60 |
| Gross WPM | Everything typed, before mistakes | Characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes |
| Net WPM | Gross less weighted mistakes (full 1, half 0.5) | Gross − mistakes ÷ minutes |
| NWPM (MP CPCT) | Correct words only | Correct words ÷ minutes |
