Delhi Police HCM Test — Exam Overview

Exam & practice guide

The Delhi Police Head Constable (Ministerial) Typing Test is conducted by Delhi Police (SSC conducts the computer-based exam) and is marks-bearing: up to 25 marks from the typing test are counted in the final result. Higher typing speed moves you into a higher marks slab.

According to the SSC notice for the 2025 examination, the test lasts 10 minutes on computer, typed from a printed passage. The minimum speed is 30 w.p.m. in English or 25 w.p.m. in Hindi, and one word is deducted for each mistake. A separate Computer (Formatting) Test is qualifying in nature. Check your own notice for the current cycle.

How this exam differs

3 Points
1

HCM typing carries up to 25 marks under the HCM 2025 notice. SSC conducts the computer-based exam, while Delhi Police conducts the typing and computer formatting tests. Faster clean speed can raise the ministerial rank; SSC DEST never does that.

2

One word is deducted for each mistake, so net words matter more than raw speed. The 400-word English and 350-word Hindi figures are passage lengths, not words you must finish.

3

Minimum speed is 30 WPM English or 25 WPM Hindi in 10 minutes, below the 35 WPM English bar used for CHSL LDC/JSA.

Preparation Tips & Strategy

Speed & Accuracy Strategy

1

Accuracy first

Each mistake costs one word, so careless errors pull you into a lower slab

2

Daily practice

30–45 min daily is more effective than occasional long sessions

3

Touch typing

Learn home row position and avoid looking at the keyboard

4

Target speed

Aim a little above the top slab (50 WPM English / 45 WPM Hindi) to allow for exam pressure

5

Mock tests

Practice full 10-minute timed printed-sheet sessions regularly

Content & Keyboard Tips

1

Read ahead

Train your eyes to read 1–2 words ahead from printed sheet while typing

2

Special characters

Practice commas, full stops, capital letters, and numbers

3

Rhythm

Maintain a steady typing rhythm — avoid bursts followed by pauses

4

Varied content

Practise with notices, reports and general passages in your chosen language

5

Formatting test

Also prepare for the qualifying Computer (Formatting) Test described in the notice

Exam-Day Rules, Accommodations & Common Mistakes

Check the official Delhi Police HCM Test notice

  • iReporting time, identity documents, the keyboard and software provided, scribe or compensatory-time provisions, and how mistakes are counted are set by the recruiting body. The current notification and your admit card override any general advice.
  • iGeneral questions: Backspace rules, keyboard layouts and Hindi fonts are answered in the typing exam FAQ.
  • iRoutines and drills: scoring rules, accuracy drills and test-day routines are in our exam guides.

Pro Tips for Success

1

Simulate exam conditions

Practice with 10-min timed printed-sheet tests — don't just do casual drills

2

Know your slab

The top slab (25 marks) is above 50 WPM in English or above 45 WPM in Hindi

3

Count your mistakes

One word is deducted per mistake, so check how errors change your net speed in practice

4

Steady speed

Practise until you clear your target slab consistently, not just on your best day

5

Read from paper

The passage is printed, so practise keeping your place on a sheet while typing

6

Start slow, finish strong

Build rhythm in first 1–2 minutes, then maintain steady pace through remaining 8 minutes

Understanding Your TypingHub Practice Report

Characters and words

  • iCharacter comparison: Ordinary incorrect, extra or missing characters carry full weight in the practice analysis. A single misspelled word can contain several character errors.
  • iCase and punctuation: Case-only substitutions and punctuation substitutions receive half weight. Added or omitted characters are counted separately.
  • iSkipped or extra words: The report identifies missing and extra words as well as character differences. Read the highlighted passage to understand each mismatch.

Using the result

  • iTwo accuracy measures: Character accuracy and word accuracy measure different things. A word counts as correct only when it matches the reference word.
  • iPractice targets: A practice pass or fail is based on this test’s configured targets. It is not a recruiting authority’s qualification decision.
  • iOfficial evaluation: Check the notice and evaluation instructions for your exact recruitment year, post and category. Do not convert this report into official examination marks.

Understanding Your Typing Practice Report

The arithmetic behind Gross WPM, Net WPM and key depressions. Your notice decides which of these it uses.

4 Measures

Gross WPM

Gross WPM = (total keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Letters, spaces and punctuation all count, and five keystrokes make one standard word.

Net WPM

Net WPM subtracts a penalty for uncorrected errors from Gross WPM. Two candidates with the same raw speed can end up several WPM apart.

Key depressions (KDPH)

Some notices state speed as key depressions. 35 WPM equals 10,500 key depressions an hour (35 × 5 × 60), and 30 WPM equals 9,000.

Full and half mistakes

TypingHub groups errors to help you review an attempt. Full and half weights in this report are practice feedback; use your recruitment's evaluation instructions for official penalties.

4-Week Practice Plan for Delhi Police HCM Test

An adaptable practice routine, not a qualification guarantee. Repeat a stage until your accuracy is steady.

4 Weeks

Week 1: Accuracy base

Touch-typing drills without looking at the keys. Hold 95% accuracy or better and ignore speed for now.

Week 2: Build speed

Two timed five-minute runs a day. Raise your pace by two or three WPM only once accuracy stays steady.

Week 3: Full-length mocks

One full Delhi Police HCM Test mock a day for the exam's full duration. Read the error report and retype the words you missed.

Week 4: Exam rehearsal

Practise at your exam's time of day, on a full-size keyboard, with your notice's backspace rule. Aim a few WPM above the target.
