KVS Typing Test — Exam Overview

Exam & practice guide

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) Typing Skill Test applies to the Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) post. In the 2025 cycle (KVS/NVS Recruitment Notification 01/2025, conducted by CBSE) the notice also includes a Computer Proficiency Test — check the notice for its details.

According to Corrigendum-2 dated 04-12-2025, the typing requirement for KVS JSA is 35 w.p.m. in English or 30 w.p.m. in Hindi on computer. The same corrigendum row covers Junior Assistant (NVS), so the 35/30 w.p.m. requirement applies to both posts.

How this exam differs

3 Points
1

Corrigendum-2 (04-12-2025) puts KVS JSA and NVS Junior Assistant in one row: 35 WPM English or 30 WPM Hindi on computer. The 10-minute timer here is a practice setting; confirm the test duration and any trial time in your instructions.

2

Speed matches EPFO and AIIMS (35/30 WPM, 10,500/9,000 KDPH) but the employer is a school organisation. Passages are office-school English, not hospital or court text.

3

The skill test is qualifying for JSA posts; stenographer posts take a shorthand test instead. Extra WPM does not replace the written paper.

Preparation Tips & Strategy

Speed & Accuracy Strategy

1

Accuracy first

Aim for less than 3% errors before trying to increase speed

2

Daily practice

30–45 min daily is more effective than occasional long sessions

3

Touch typing

Learn home row position and avoid looking at the keyboard

4

Target speed

Aim for 40–45 WPM in practice to leave a margin above 35 WPM

5

Computer skills

Prepare for the Computer Proficiency Test described in the notice too

Content & Keyboard Tips

1

Read ahead

Train your eyes to read 1–2 words ahead while typing

2

Special characters

Practice commas, full stops, apostrophes, and capital letters

3

Rhythm

Maintain a steady typing rhythm — avoid bursts followed by pauses

4

Varied content

Practice with educational and administrative passages

5

Timed sessions

Practise full timed sessions regularly on a computer

PWD & Special Accommodations

Check the Notice

  • iAccommodations for PwBD candidates are set out in the KVS/NVS notice
  • ✓Read the eligibility and certificate requirements before applying

Before Test Day

  • iKeep the certificates the notice asks for ready
  • ✓Contact the help channels in the notice if anything is unclear

Exam-Day Rules, Accommodations & Common Mistakes

Check the official KVS Typing Test notice

  • iReporting time, identity documents, the keyboard and software provided, scribe or compensatory-time provisions, and how mistakes are counted are set by the recruiting body. The current notification and your admit card override any general advice.
  • iGeneral questions: Backspace rules, keyboard layouts and Hindi fonts are answered in the typing exam FAQ.
  • iRoutines and drills: scoring rules, accuracy drills and test-day routines are in our exam guides.

Pro Tips for Success

1

Simulate exam conditions

Practice with full timed tests on a computer — don't just do short drills

2

Read the instructions

Check the notice for duration, error and editing-key rules before you plan your practice

3

Two tests to prepare

The 2025 cycle includes a Computer Proficiency Test as well as typing — prepare for both

4

Consistent WPM target

Achieving 40 WPM consistently gives a margin above the 35 WPM requirement

5

Varied passages

Practise with official letters and general passages so unfamiliar words do not slow you down

6

Start slow, finish strong

Build rhythm in the first minutes, then hold a steady pace to the end

Understanding Your TypingHub Practice Report

Characters and words

  • iCharacter comparison: Ordinary incorrect, extra or missing characters carry full weight in the practice analysis. A single misspelled word can contain several character errors.
  • iCase and punctuation: Case-only substitutions and punctuation substitutions receive half weight. Added or omitted characters are counted separately.
  • iSkipped or extra words: The report identifies missing and extra words as well as character differences. Read the highlighted passage to understand each mismatch.

Using the result

  • iTwo accuracy measures: Character accuracy and word accuracy measure different things. A word counts as correct only when it matches the reference word.
  • iPractice targets: A practice pass or fail is based on this test’s configured targets. It is not a recruiting authority’s qualification decision.
  • iOfficial evaluation: Check the notice and evaluation instructions for your exact recruitment year, post and category. Do not convert this report into official examination marks.

Understanding Your Typing Practice Report

The arithmetic behind Gross WPM, Net WPM and key depressions. Your notice decides which of these it uses.

4 Measures

Gross WPM

Gross WPM = (total keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Letters, spaces and punctuation all count, and five keystrokes make one standard word.

Net WPM

Net WPM subtracts a penalty for uncorrected errors from Gross WPM. Two candidates with the same raw speed can end up several WPM apart.

Key depressions (KDPH)

Some notices state speed as key depressions. 35 WPM equals 10,500 key depressions an hour (35 × 5 × 60), and 30 WPM equals 9,000.

Full and half mistakes

TypingHub groups errors to help you review an attempt. Full and half weights in this report are practice feedback; use your recruitment's evaluation instructions for official penalties.

4-Week Practice Plan for KVS Typing Test

An adaptable practice routine, not a qualification guarantee. Repeat a stage until your accuracy is steady.

4 Weeks

Week 1: Accuracy base

Touch-typing drills without looking at the keys. Hold 95% accuracy or better and ignore speed for now.

Week 2: Build speed

Two timed five-minute runs a day. Raise your pace by two or three WPM only once accuracy stays steady.

Week 3: Full-length mocks

One full KVS Typing Test mock a day for the exam's full duration. Read the error report and retype the words you missed.

Week 4: Exam rehearsal

Practise at your exam's time of day, on a full-size keyboard, with your notice's backspace rule. Aim a few WPM above the target.

Yes. Choose Hindi in the Language menu of this test. It sets the 30 WPM Hindi target, opens on Remington GAIL (the Kruti Dev keys) and lists Hindi passages. Keep your keyboard on English; the test types the Hindi letters for the layout you pick. Confirm the Hindi font and layout in the current KVS or NVS notice.

DURATION

How long should I practise for KVS JSA?

The timer here is 10 minutes. Confirm the actual typing duration in the instructions for your post and cycle.
