CSIR JSA Typing Test — Exam Overview
The CSIR Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) typing test is the skill test for JSA (General, F&A and S&P) posts at Level 2 in CSIR laboratories. Each lab advertises separately, but the rule comes from CSIR’s letters of 23 April 2014 and 13 July 2015, which adopt the Staff Selection Commission’s methodology: 35 WPM in English (10,500 key depressions per hour) or 30 WPM in Hindi (9,000), in 10 minutes, in the language chosen in the application.
Words are counted as key strokes divided by 5. Mistakes up to 5% (UR/OBC/SC/OH/VH) or 7% (ST/HH/ESM) are ignored, and net speed is reduced by the mistakes beyond that allowance. The test is qualifying; merit comes from Paper-II. Labs differ on format and keys: CSIR-CDRI’s 2025 instructions said Backspace is not allowed. This page practises the English test with a 10-minute timer and a 35 WPM, 95% accuracy target.
How this exam differs
CSIR follows SSC methodology. Words are key strokes divided by 5, and net speed is words per minute minus mistakes beyond the allowance: 5% for UR/OBC/SC/OH/VH and 7% for ST/HH/ESM candidates.
CSIR’s worked example: 1,600 strokes is 320 words, or 32 WPM. With 19 mistakes, 16 are ignored and 3 count, so the net speed is 29 WPM, short of 35.
Each lab advertises and runs its own test, and the format differs. CSIR-CDRI’s 2025 instructions disallowed Backspace, so practise with it off if your lab’s instructions say so.

How CSIR Works Out Net Speed
| Step | CSIR worked example | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Key strokes typed in 10 minutes | 1,600 strokes ÷ 5 | 320 words |
| Gross speed | 320 words ÷ 10 minutes | 32 WPM |
| Mistakes | 19 mistakes; 5% of 320 = 16 ignored | 3 count |
| Net speed | 32 − 3 | 29 WPM: below 35 |
Worked example from the CSIR instructions annexed to the CSIR-CMERI Advt 02/2025 typing-test notice.
Important qualifying notes
- Full mistake (CSIR-CMERI 2025): an omitted, substituted or added word
- Half mistake (CSIR-CMERI 2025): spacing, spelling or capitalisation errors
- Format and keys vary by lab; read your own lab’s instructions
Test Pattern — What CSIR Instructions Say
Common CSIR Rule
- 1English 35 WPM or Hindi 30 WPM
- 2Duration: 10 minutes
- 3Words = key strokes ÷ 5
- 45% or 7% of mistakes ignored by category
- 5Qualifying; merit from Paper-II
Varies by Lab
- iBackspace: not allowed in CSIR-CDRI’s 2025 instructions; other labs not stated
- iTest format and conducting agency
- iTest date: no lab typing test found for October–December 2026
- iRead the notice issued by the lab you applied to
Using the CSIR Net-Speed Rule
Know your allowance
At 350 words, 5% is about 17 mistakes. Each mistake beyond that costs a full word per minute in the worked example.
Fix full mistakes first
Omitted and added words are full mistakes. Keep your eyes on the passage so you do not skip words.
Practise with Backspace off
If your lab follows CDRI’s 2025 rule, Backspace will not work. Switch it off here for some runs.

- iReporting time, identity documents, the keyboard and software provided, scribe or compensatory-time provisions, and how mistakes are counted are set by the recruiting body. The current notification and your admit card override any general advice.

Before Your Lab’s Test
Read your lab’s notice
Each lab issues its own instructions. Check the keys, format and date in yours.
Aim for a margin
Train to 40 WPM with few mistakes so excess errors cannot pull you under 35.
Understanding Your TypingHub Practice Report
Characters and words
- iCharacter comparison: Ordinary incorrect, extra or missing characters carry full weight in the practice analysis. A single misspelled word can contain several character errors.
- iCase and punctuation: Case-only substitutions and punctuation substitutions receive half weight. Added or omitted characters are counted separately.
- iSkipped or extra words: The report identifies missing and extra words as well as character differences. Read the highlighted passage to understand each mismatch.
Using the result
- iTwo accuracy measures: Character accuracy and word accuracy measure different things. A word counts as correct only when it matches the reference word.
- iPractice targets: A practice pass or fail is based on this test’s configured targets. It is not a recruiting authority’s qualification decision.
- iOfficial evaluation: Check the notice and evaluation instructions for your exact recruitment year, post and category. Do not convert this report into official examination marks.
Understanding Your Typing Practice Report
The arithmetic behind Gross WPM, Net WPM and key depressions. Your notice decides which of these it uses.
Gross WPM
Gross WPM = (total keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Letters, spaces and punctuation all count, and five keystrokes make one standard word.
Net WPM
Net WPM subtracts a penalty for uncorrected errors from Gross WPM. Two candidates with the same raw speed can end up several WPM apart.
Key depressions (KDPH)
Some notices state speed as key depressions. 35 WPM equals 10,500 key depressions an hour (35 × 5 × 60), and 30 WPM equals 9,000.
Full and half mistakes
TypingHub groups errors to help you review an attempt. Full and half weights in this report are practice feedback; use your recruitment's evaluation instructions for official penalties.
4-Week Practice Plan for CSIR JSA Typing Test
An adaptable practice routine, not a qualification guarantee. Repeat a stage until your accuracy is steady.
Week 1: Accuracy base
Touch-typing drills without looking at the keys. Hold 95% accuracy or better and ignore speed for now.
Week 2: Build speed
Two timed five-minute runs a day. Raise your pace by two or three WPM only once accuracy stays steady.
Week 3: Full-length mocks
One full CSIR JSA Typing Test mock a day for the exam's full duration. Read the error report and retype the words you missed.
Week 4: Exam rehearsal
Practise at your exam's time of day, on a full-size keyboard, with your notice's backspace rule. Aim a few WPM above the target.

Frequently Asked Questions (CSIR JSA Typing Test)
MISTAKESWhat is a full and a half mistake in CSIR JSA typing?
CSIR-CMERI’s 2025 instructions count an omitted, substituted or added word as a full mistake, and spacing, spelling or capitalisation errors as half mistakes.
BACKSPACEIs Backspace allowed in the CSIR JSA typing test?
It depends on the lab. CSIR-CDRI’s 2025 instructions said Backspace was not allowed; the other lab instructions read for this page do not say. Check your lab’s notice.
SPEEDWhat typing speed does CSIR JSA need?
35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi in 10 minutes, under the CSIR rules that adopt SSC methodology.
NET SPEEDHow is net speed calculated for CSIR JSA?
Words are key strokes divided by 5, and speed is words divided by 10 minutes. Mistakes beyond 5% (or 7% for ST/HH/ESM) are then taken off. In CSIR’s example, 320 words with 19 mistakes gives 32 − 3 = 29 WPM.
MERITDo typing marks count in the CSIR JSA merit?
No. The typing test is qualifying. Merit comes from Paper-II.
