CAPF HCM Typing Test — Exam Overview
The CAPF Head Constable (Ministerial) typing test is the skill test in the 2024 common recruitment run by the Ministry of Home Affairs, with BSF as the nodal force. It covers HC (Ministerial) in BSF, CRPF, ITBP, CISF and SSB and Havildar (Clerk) in Assam Rifles. The detailed advertisement dated 9 June 2024 asks for 35 WPM in English on computer or 30 WPM in Hindi in Mangal, with 10 minutes allowed.
Mistakes up to 5% of the words typed are allowed; for each mistake beyond 5%, 10 words are deducted from the total typed. The skill test is qualifying, and ranking comes from the CBT. The notice does not state whether Backspace works or how long the passage is. This page practises the English test with a 10-minute timer, a 35 WPM target and a 95% accuracy target.
How this exam differs
One rule set covers HC (Ministerial) in BSF, CRPF, ITBP, CISF and SSB and Havildar (Clerk) in Assam Rifles, because the 2024 recruitment is a single MHA notice with BSF as the nodal force. Older force-specific notices used different rules.
Mistakes up to 5% of the words typed are allowed. For each mistake beyond that, 10 words are taken off the total typed, so a few extra errors cost far more than a slower pace.
The speed is 35 WPM English (10,500 KDPH) or 30 WPM Hindi in Mangal, against 30 / 25 WPM for Delhi Police HCM. The test is qualifying; ranking comes from the CBT.
Basic Details

| Nature of test | Qualifying | Merit comes from the CBT |
| Next stage | Date not announced | CBT held 2–3 September 2026 |
Posts Covered by the 2024 Common Recruitment
- Head Constable (Ministerial) — BSF, CRPF, ITBP, CISF and SSB
- Havildar (Clerk) — Assam Rifles
ASI (Stenographer) in the same notice takes a shorthand test instead. Older force-specific notices (for example CRPF 2022 or CISF 2022) used their own rules; use the 2024 common notice for this cycle.
Typing Standard (2024 Notice)
| Language | Standard in 10 minutes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| English (on computer) | 35 WPM (10,500 KDPH) | 2024 notice |
| Hindi (Mangal font) | 30 WPM (9,000 KDPH) | 2024 notice |
Speed is counted at an average of 5 key depressions per word. The notice does not use the words "net" or "gross"; it deducts 10 words from the total typed for each mistake beyond 5%.
Important qualifying notes
- Spelling errors, omissions, repetitions and words not in the passage count as mistakes
- The test is qualifying only; it does not add marks to the CBT merit
- Whether Backspace works and the passage length are not stated; check the skill-test instructions BSF issues
Test Pattern — What the Notice Says
Typing Test Basics
- 1English typing on computer at 35 WPM, or Hindi at 30 WPM in Mangal
- 2Time allowed: 10 minutes
- 3Mistakes up to 5% of the words typed are allowed
- 410 words are deducted for each mistake beyond 5%
- 5Qualifying; ranking comes from the CBT
What to Confirm Yourself
- iWhether Backspace and Delete work: not stated in the notice
- iPassage length and on-screen layout: not stated
- iSkill-test date and venue: watch the BSF recruitment portal
- iRead your admit card and the skill-test instructions before the test
How the 5% Rule Shapes Practice
Work out your budget
At 350 words typed, 5% is about 17 mistakes. Each mistake past that costs 10 words, so three extra mistakes cost 30 words.
Aim for accuracy first
Keep practice accuracy above 95% before you push for speed above 35 WPM.
Count whole words
Omitted and repeated words count as mistakes. Keep your eyes on the passage so you do not skip a line.
Exam-Day Rules, Accommodations & Common Mistakes
Check the official CAPF HCM Typing Test notice
- iReporting time, identity documents, the keyboard and software provided, scribe or compensatory-time provisions, and how mistakes are counted are set by the recruiting body. The current notification and your admit card override any general advice.
- iGeneral questions: Backspace rules, keyboard layouts and Hindi fonts are answered in the typing exam FAQ.
- iRoutines and drills: scoring rules, accuracy drills and test-day routines are in our exam guides.
Before the Skill Test
Practise with Backspace off too
The notice does not say whether Backspace works. Alternate runs with it on and off so neither setting surprises you.
Use a full-size keyboard
The test is on computer. Practise on a full-size keyboard as well, so the test-centre keyboard does not feel unfamiliar.
Do not confuse it with Delhi Police HCM
Delhi Police HCM has a lower speed and a marks-based typing test. Practise the CAPF standard.
Keep checking BSF notices
Watch the BSF recruitment portal for the skill-test date and instructions.
Understanding Your TypingHub Practice Report
Characters and words
- iCharacter comparison: Ordinary incorrect, extra or missing characters carry full weight in the practice analysis. A single misspelled word can contain several character errors.
- iCase and punctuation: Case-only substitutions and punctuation substitutions receive half weight. Added or omitted characters are counted separately.
- iSkipped or extra words: The report identifies missing and extra words as well as character differences. Read the highlighted passage to understand each mismatch.
Using the result
- iTwo accuracy measures: Character accuracy and word accuracy measure different things. A word counts as correct only when it matches the reference word.
- iPractice targets: A practice pass or fail is based on this test’s configured targets. It is not a recruiting authority’s qualification decision.
- iOfficial evaluation: Check the notice and evaluation instructions for your exact recruitment year, post and category. Do not convert this report into official examination marks.
Understanding Your Typing Practice Report
The arithmetic behind Gross WPM, Net WPM and key depressions. Your notice decides which of these it uses.
Gross WPM
Gross WPM = (total keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Letters, spaces and punctuation all count, and five keystrokes make one standard word.
Net WPM
Net WPM subtracts a penalty for uncorrected errors from Gross WPM. Two candidates with the same raw speed can end up several WPM apart.
Key depressions (KDPH)
Some notices state speed as key depressions. 35 WPM equals 10,500 key depressions an hour (35 × 5 × 60), and 30 WPM equals 9,000.
Full and half mistakes
TypingHub groups errors to help you review an attempt. Full and half weights in this report are practice feedback; use your recruitment's evaluation instructions for official penalties.
4-Week Practice Plan for CAPF HCM Typing Test
An adaptable practice routine, not a qualification guarantee. Repeat a stage until your accuracy is steady.
Week 1: Accuracy base
Touch-typing drills without looking at the keys. Hold 95% accuracy or better and ignore speed for now.
Week 2: Build speed
Two timed five-minute runs a day. Raise your pace by two or three WPM only once accuracy stays steady.
Week 3: Full-length mocks
One full CAPF HCM Typing Test mock a day for the exam's full duration. Read the error report and retype the words you missed.
Week 4: Exam rehearsal
Practise at your exam's time of day, on a full-size keyboard, with your notice's backspace rule. Aim a few WPM above the target.
