The RSSB LDC typing test (Clerk Grade-II and Junior Assistant, formerly RSMSSB) is not one typing passage. Under RSSB's Phase-II instructions of 12 December 2024 it is four papers of 10 minutes each: Hindi speed, English speed, Hindi efficiency and English efficiency. Each paper carries 25 marks, and you must score at least 9 marks in every one of the four. A strong English speed paper cannot make up for a weak Excel paper.
This guide explains each paper, how the marks are counted, what the DevLys 010 rule means for Hindi typists, and how to prepare. The figures are from the 2024 instructions; check the scheme printed for your own cycle before the test.
The four papers at a glance
| Paper | Time | Marks | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hindi speed | 10 min | 25 (minimum 9) | Type a 400-word Hindi passage in DevLys 010 |
| English speed | 10 min | 25 (minimum 9) | Type a 500-word English passage |
| Hindi efficiency | 10 min | 25 (minimum 9) | Formatting tasks in MS Word 2013 / MS Excel 2013 |
| English efficiency | 10 min | 25 (minimum 9) | The same kind of tasks on English text |
SC and ST candidates get up to 5% relaxation in the minimum, as the instructions state. Everyone else needs the full 9 marks in each paper.
How the speed papers are marked
The speed papers do not use a words-per-minute cutoff. You earn marks for every correct word:
- English: 0.05 marks per correct word. The 500-word passage is worth 25 marks in full, and 9 marks needs 180 correct words.
- Hindi: 0.0625 marks per correct word. The 400-word passage is worth 25 marks in full, and 9 marks needs 144 correct words.
In 10 minutes, 180 correct English words is a clean 18 words per minute, and 144 correct Hindi words is about 14 to 15. That sounds low, but these are correct words only. A wrong word earns nothing, so a candidate typing 30 WPM with many slips can score less than one typing 22 WPM cleanly. Treat 9 marks as the floor, not the goal: the speed papers are where you can bank marks above the minimum.
You can check your own figure with our WPM calculator: it shows gross speed, mistakes and net speed from any attempt.
DevLys 010 and the Backspace rule
The Hindi speed paper is typed in DevLys 010 on the typewriter (Remington) keyboard, and the font cannot be changed. DevLys 010 shares most key positions with Kruti Dev 010, so a candidate trained on Kruti Dev keys already knows nearly the whole layout. RSSB itself notes that a few keys differ, so check any sign or symbol your notice mentions.
Two rules catch candidates out:
- Backspace works only inside the current word. Once you press Space or Enter for the next word, you cannot go back. Fix a slip before the space, or leave it.
- Every character counts. RSSB treats even an invisible repeated matra as a wrong word. In a legacy font, typing ि twice can look like one ि on screen and still be marked wrong.
If you learned Hindi on Inscript or Remington GAIL, read Remington GAIL vs Inscript first. GAIL keeps most Kruti Dev keys, but the danda, ृ, the nukta and a few symbols move, and those habits cost marks under DevLys.
The efficiency papers: MS Word and MS Excel 2013
The efficiency papers test office skills, not typing speed. The 2024 instructions describe 15 questions per language in MS Word 2013 and MS Excel 2013, covering tasks such as:
- paragraph formatting and line spacing
- page setup and paging
- header and footer
- font changes and page background
- table borders
- finding and replacing a word
Ctrl+Z (undo) works, but copy-paste, right-click and Select All are disabled. That means you must know where each option sits in the ribbon, because the usual shortcuts and context menus are not available. Many candidates practise only typing and lose the efficiency papers. With a 9-mark minimum in each, that ends the attempt.
A 4-week preparation plan
- Week 1, accuracy: one 10-minute English and one 10-minute Hindi passage daily. Count only correct words. Aim to stay under 3 to 4 mistakes per attempt, even if speed drops.
- Week 2, the Backspace habit: practise with the rule "fix before the space, never after". On our RSSB LDC practice test you can turn Backspace off to rehearse finishing words cleanly.
- Week 3, efficiency: 30 minutes a day in MS Word and Excel 2013 (or a close version) without right-click or copy-paste. Time yourself on each task in the list above.
- Week 4, full rehearsal: two days a week, sit all four papers back to back, 10 minutes each, as on the test day.
For Hindi passages, use Hindi typing paragraphs and the 10-minute Hindi typing test, set to the Kruti Dev layout. For English, the 10-minute typing test matches the paper length.
RSSB LDC and Rajasthan High Court are different tests
Do not mix up RSSB Clerk Grade-II with the Rajasthan High Court JJA / Clerk typing test. The High Court notices of 2017 and 2022 used Kruti Dev 010 and a 5-minute test at 8,000 key depressions per hour. The two recruitments have different boards, different marking and different notices. For a side-by-side list of Hindi typing rules, see Hindi typing test rules by exam.
Frequently asked questions
How many marks are needed to pass the RSSB LDC typing test?
At least 9 out of 25 in each of the four papers (Hindi speed, English speed, Hindi efficiency and English efficiency), under the 2024 instructions. SC/ST candidates get up to 5% relaxation in the minimum.
How many correct words do I need in the RSSB speed paper?
180 correct words in the English paper (0.05 marks each) and 144 correct words in the Hindi paper (0.0625 marks each) to reach 9 marks.
Which Hindi font is used in RSSB LDC typing?
DevLys 010 on the typewriter keyboard, with no font change allowed. Kruti Dev 010 keys are almost the same, so Kruti Dev practice carries over.
Can I use Backspace in the RSSB typing test?
Only inside the word you are typing. After you press Space or Enter, Backspace no longer reaches the previous word.
When is the RSSB LDC typing test in 2026?
RSSB had not announced the typing test date when this guide was written. Published coverage gave the written result date as 28 September 2026. Watch rssb.rajasthan.gov.in and your admit card.
Does TypingHub mark my practice like RSSB?
No. Our practice test runs a timed typing attempt and reports speed, accuracy and every mistake. It does not award RSSB marks or run the efficiency papers.
